A substation is a facility that changes voltage from high to low or from low to high, among other important functions. When electric transmission lines enter a substation, the voltage is lowered using transformers. The lower voltage electricity is delivered to customers using electric distribution lines.

Constructing Opal Substation will add equipment to keep power flowing through Fauquier County and provide relief to the near-capacity Warrenton Substation. The new substation will feed the distribution system that delivers electricity to customers' homes and businesses.

All Dominion Energy projects in Fauquier County share the same goal: serving our customers safely and reliably. However, Opal Substation is not directly tied to any other projects. It is needed as an alternate source to serve the distribution system as the Warrenton Substation nears full capacity.

Protecting the grid and making it secure against natural and man-made acts while minimizing impacts to the community is a top priority for Dominion Energy. The current plans call for a 12-foot tall, 5/8-inch aluminized steel fabric fence around the substation. We will preserve existing woods on the property and supplement with a dense evergreen tree screen along eastern and western property borders. Additionally, a berm with buffer trees will screen the front of the property.

This project is not expected to disrupt your electric service. If there are any planned temporary disruptions to your power supply, we will make every effort to notify you in advance of that work.
