Update your limit anytime to reflect seasonal changes. For example, you might set a higher limit during summer or winter when heating or cooling is used more often.

Your Alerts, Your Way

  • Energy Spend Alerts (track by dollar amount): Set monthly spending limits that fit your budget. Great for keeping your energy costs predictable.
  • Usage Alerts (track by kilowatt-hours): Set a daily or monthly usage limit based on how much energy you want to use. Ideal if you’re focused on energy conservation or efficiency.

How to Sign Up

  1. Sign in to your online account. If you don't have one yet, it's easy to register.
  2. Choose what to track. On the communication preferences page, you can monitor your energy usage by kilowatt-hours or by dollar amount.
  3. Set your limit based on what works best for you. You’ll get an alert if your usage goes over that amount. (Your average amount will be set as the starting point, but you can adjust it anytime.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Energy Alerts are a free service available to eligible customers. They notify you by text, email, or both when your energy use or bill amount goes over the limit you set. Alerts help you stay informed and stay within your energy or budget goals.

Usage Alerts track your energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh), while Energy Spend Alerts track your estimated bill amount in dollars. You can choose the one that best fits your goals or use both.

Energy Alerts don’t directly reduce your bill, but they help you stay aware of your usage so you can make changes before costs add up. You use alerts to spot unusual spikes and adjust habits to avoid surprises
You must have a smart meter, an online account and a valid email address and/or mobile device that accepts text messages. If you’re on Budget Billing, you won’t be eligible to sign up for Energy Spend Alerts.
Energy Alerts are only available to customers with a smart meter (AMI). If you're unsure whether you have one, you can check by signing into your online account to see if Energy Alerts are available in your communication preferences.
You can manage your preferences anytime by signing in to your online account. While there isn’t a “pause” button, you can disable alerts and re-enable them when you're ready.
Your energy usage is calculated by measuring the amount of electricity your home uses over time. This is typically recorded in kilowatt-hours (kWh) using your electric meter. Each time your meter is read, it shows how much energy you've used since the last reading. The difference between the two readings is your usage for that billing period.
It depends on your goals. If you're focused on budgeting, tracking by dollar amount may be best. If you're more interested in conserving energy, tracking by kWh gives you a clearer picture of your usage.

Your default limit is based on your average energy use. If you’re new, a typical average is used to get you started. You can adjust it anytime to fit your needs. For best results, review your usage history periodically and adjust seasonally so it matches your energy patterns through the year. You can view your usage history in your online account.

Usage Overview is available in your online account and gives you a quick look at how much energy you use over time: daily, weekly, or monthly. It’s a great starting point when setting your limit. For example, if you usually use around 1,000 kWh a month, you might set your alert a little above that to catch any unexpected spikes. It helps you choose a limit that fits your routine, so you can stay on top of your energy use and avoid surprises on your bill.
