A Smart Transportation Choice

What are the Benefits?

Electric Vehicles (EVs) Cost Less to Operate than Gas Powered Cars

Depending on your local gasoline and electric rates, EV operation can be 3 to 5 times cheaper than gasoline and diesel-powered cars. All-electric models do not use oil; thus they do not need oil changes!

EVs are Environmentally Friendly

EVs have no tailpipe emissions. While the power plant producing your electricity may produce emissions, electricity from hydroelectric, solar, nuclear, or wind-powered plants is generally emission-free.

Never Go to the Gas Station Again

EVs do not require gasoline and can be charged at home with a standard 120V outlet or a 240V level 2 charger can be installed for faster charging.

EV Driving Range & Recharge Time

EV driving range varies from around 80 to over 330 miles on a full charge, depending on the model. The average American's daily round-trip commute is less than 30 miles. Fully recharging the battery pack can take 4 to 8 hours, while a “fast charge” to 80% capacity can take as little as 30 minutes.

Electric School Bus Program

We are partnering with Virginia school districts to help them transition their school bus fleets from diesel to electric. This ongoing initiative will further to benefit our environment, our communities, our schools, and most importantly, our children. Visit our Electric School Buses page for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Electric vehicles are clean, quiet, and fun to drive. EV drivers save money on fuel and maintenance costs, reduce their environmental impact, and contribute to energy independence by using domestically produced sources of energy. Learn more using our interactive EV tools and calculators.

Congratulations on your new vehicle! It's not necessary for you to change your electric rate now that you have an EV; you can remain on the Basic Residential Rate or switch to the off-peak plan to save money on charging during off-peak and super off-peak hours.

To start charging, your EV came with a Level 1 charging cord that can plug directly into a standard outlet in your garage or driveway. If you would like to charge at a faster speed, refer to the Handbook for Residential EV Charging for a step-by-step guide to installing a Level 2 charging station at home.

The cost of charging your EV depends on how much you drive. For customers who drive less than 40 miles a day, it costs about $1 a day to charge your EV at home. Your electric bill will likely go up, but your monthly gasoline expenses should drop considerably more.

Yes. The Off Peak Plan can help customers save money by shifting energy usage, including EV charging, to more affordable, off-peak hours. Please note that you are not required to change your electric rate if you drive an EV.

The electric grid can certainly support the number of EVs on the road today. As adoption increases, Dominion Energy is investing in technology, tools, and programs to encourage smart charging behavior, such as charging during off-peak times.

We're also strengthening and modernizing our grid for the future. We know that access to reliable, clean, competitively priced energy is more important than ever to our customers, including those who rely on electricity to power their EVs. Electric Vehicle Pricing Plans Pilot Program (Closed)

We launched the Electric Vehicle Pricing Plans Pilot Program to study the impacts of EV charging on the grid. The pilot program began in 2011 and ended November 30, 2018. Enrollment is now closed but current participants may remain on the pricing plans. We will use the results of the pilot to evaluate future EV-related offerings for customers.
