Get a $750 rebate when you purchase and install an ENERGY STAR® Certified Heat Pump Water Heater.

ENERGY STAR® certified heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) save energy by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the water in the storage tank – essentially a refrigerator run in reverse. It takes much less power to move heat from one place to another than generating heat (like a typical electric water heater does via hot electric resistance coils).

Key Benefits

ENERGY STAR® certified HPWHs are an easy choice for energy savings, performance and reliability, and use less than half of the energy of standard electric water heater models, saving homeowners money on their monthly electric bills.

ENERGY STAR® Certified HPWH Savings Based on Household Size

Household Size Annual Savings Payback (years) Lifetime Savings
2 $170 4.8 $1,370
3 $250 3.2 $2,450
4 $330 2.4 $3,530

If all residential water heaters sold in the United States were ENERGY STAR® certified, the energy cost savings would grow to nearly $13.4 billion each year, and more than 155 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented, equivalent to the emissions from nearly 15 million vehicles.

In most homes, HPWHs can be installed right where your current electric water heater sits, making them the best choice for your home. ENERGY STAR® now makes it easy to determine whether an Heat Pump Water Heater is right for your home with its mobile-friendly, Water Heater Replacement Guide.

The guide walks you through 4 simple installation considerations:

  • Electricity Supply: Your current heater is electric, not gas.
  • Access to Air: You have a location for your new water heater that is greater than 40 degrees F and well ventilated.
  • Head Room: You have the necessary ceiling height (HPWHs are taller).
  • Water Drainage: You have any area for drainage, like a nearby floor drain, or other outlets via a small condensate pump.

If your electric water heater is more than 10 years old, be proactive and consider replacing it with an ENERGY STAR® heat pump water heater (HPWH) before it fails.
