Mother Paying Bills

Federal help for low-income households.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides home energy assistance to help qualifying low-income households meet their heating and/or cooling needs.

Your Community Action Agency in your county may be able to offer you one or more of the following types of assistance:

  • Utility bill payment help
  • Energy crisis help
  • Weatherization and energy-related home repairs

How do I apply?

The Community Action Agency in your county determines if your household's income and other factors qualify you to receive LIHEAP assistance.

What documents do I need to apply?

Check what you need to bring before you visit your Community Action Agency. Most require:

  1. Names and Social Security Numbers (SSNs)
    • List everyone who lives in your home.
    • SSNs are required for all applicants.
    • If you're a non-citizen (like a permanent resident, refugee, or asylee), you may not be able to apply without an SSN.
  2. Proof of Recent Household Income
    • Check with your local agency to find out how far back your income documents should go.
    • You might need a recent pay stub or income statements for a specific time period.

Household income includes (but isn't limited to):

    • Wages
    • Social Security
    • Unemployment Benefits
    • Pension
    • Disability Payments
    • Alimony
  3. Proof of present address.
  4. Most recent copy of your electric, gas, or other home energy bill.
