South Carolina natural gas customers will have a new way to significantly reduce their carbon footprint and support renewable natural gas projects. GreenTherm℠ is a voluntary program that offsets carbon emissions from natural gas use in customer's homes and businesses. The program works by supporting projects in South Carolina, and in neighboring states, that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

GreenTherm

GreenTherm℠ is available to residential and commercial customers. To participate, you may purchase carbon offsets in $4 blocks on your monthly bill. A typical residential customer can offset their entire natural gas carbon footprint each month by purchasing three $4 blocks a month, or $12 total a month, achieving net zero carbon emissions from their monthly natural gas usage.

Project Type: Landfill Gas Capture/Combustion
Name: Greenville County Landfill Gas Utilization Project
Location: Greenville, SC
Registry: Climate Action Reserve
Project ID: CAR495

The Greenville County Landfill Gas Utilization Project, built, owned, and operated by Greenville Gas Producers, LLC, is a landfill gas (LFG) collection and utilization project taking place at the Enoree landfill in Greer, SC. The Enoree Landfill is a municipal solid waste landfill that opened in 1991 and closed in January of 2007, when it was capped with a high-density polyethylene material. At the time of closure there was approximately 3.5 million tons of waste in place (3.2 million tonnes), with an NMOC emission rate below 12 Mg/yr. The project activity includes methane capture and destruction with an open flare and a modular electricity generation plant. The flare began operating in August 2007. Construction of the electricity generation plant, with an installed capacity of 3.2 MW, was completed in August, 2008.

GreenTherm is a carbon offset program that allows customers to voluntarily offset carbon emissions from natural gas use in their home or business by supporting projects reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

ThermWise is an energy conservation program that promotes the use of energy efficient practices and rebates to reduce natural gas usage.

Carbon offsets compensate for emissions from one source, such as your home, by reducing emissions from another source, such as a landfill. That way there is no overall increase in emissions. Carbon offsets are an effective tool used by people, businesses and governments around the world to combat climate change.

Most of our everyday activities, such as driving, using electricity or using natural gas, produce emissions. When we use natural gas to heat our home or cook food, we produce emissions as well. This program offsets emissions from your home by reducing emissions from other sources.

Everyone has a role to play in combatting climate change. Our company is taking bold and important steps every day to achieve our goal of net zero emissions. This program is an affordable way for our customers to join us on our journey and have a positive impact on the environment.

When a qualified carbon mitigation project is completed and reduces emissions from a source, the project developer can sell carbon offsets to a third party through a transparent and independently certified process. These carbon offsets must be independently measured and validated to ensure the emission reductions are real, accurate, permanent, and additional to what would be expected from normal day-to-day practices. We purchased the offsets for this program through a competitive bidding process to make sure they provide the best value for our customers. We then sell the offsets to our customers who participate in the program. We do not make a profit from the program.

Participation in the GreenTherm program is completely voluntary. A typical customer can elect to pay a surcharge of $12 per month, or three blocks per month, to completely offset their home's emissions each month, or purchase more blocks to offset even more emissions. Participation can be cancelled once during a 12-month period.

No. We do not make a profit from the program.
