NC GreenPower improves our environment by supporting in-state renewable energy, carbon offset projects and providing grants for educational solar installations at N.C. K-12 schools.

NC GreenPower is supported entirely by voluntary contributions from citizens and businesses across the state. Your donation can add more renewable energy to North Carolina’s power supply while also enhancing our students’ education through their Solar+ Schools program, or support projects that mitigate carbon dioxide.

Renewable energy contributions are used to pay generators for each kilowatt hour of green energy they produce and put onto the electric grid. And while green power may not be going to the individual contributor’s home, renewable energy projects add their electrons to North Carolina’s power supply for the benefit of all North Carolinians. These donations also provide N.C. K-12 schools with solar education packages.

Carbon offset contributions are used to pay carbon mitigation projects for every pound of greenhouse gas that is destroyed from their project. Funds support cleaner air, fund local projects and help create N.C. jobs.

Mass Market

(most residential and small commercial customers)

• For each $4 Renewable Energy block subsidized by a member, NC GreenPower pays a premium to a generator producing green power from renewable sources like the sun, wind, and organic matter.
• For every $4 donated, 125 kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy is supplied to the electric grid in North Carolina, rather than from traditional sources. In addition, each $4 donation provides grants to N.C. K-12 schools for educational solar installations.
• Over the course of a year, that monthly $4 donation will support 1,500 kWh of green power – that's more than five weeks' worth of traditional residential power usage put back on the grid from renewable resources, and the environmental equivalent of planting 240 trees!

Large-Volume Market

(for purchase by larger customers)

• Customers can support energy produced from a wider range of sources, such as solar and biomass, at a reduced rate of $2.50 per block of 250 kWh, with a minimum of 40 blocks (or just $100) per month. Carbon Offsets

• NC GreenPower also offers the ability for you to support local carbon offset projects. For each $4 block contributed by a member, NC GreenPower pays a premium to a project owner or developer in the NC/SC/VA regional area that is mitigating greenhouse gases through a project such as: methane gas capture from animal waste or a landfill; reforestation or avoiding deforestation.
• For every $4 donated, 1,000 pounds of carbon dioxide or carbon dioxide equivalent emissions are mitigated.
• Over the course of a year, that monthly $4 donation will offset, 12,000 lbs. of greenhouse gases – that's the approximate emissions of a car traveling 17,010 miles and is like planting 923 trees!
