100% renewable energy program

This new voluntary program enables residential and non-residential customers with the opportunity to match 100 percent of their energy needs with solar, hydropower and biomass renewable energy. The Dominion Energy 100% Renewable Energy℠ program provides customers with the ability to support the continued development of renewable energy sources and ensure a diverse fuel mix.

How Does the Program Work?

Dominion Energy 100% Renewable Energy℠ allows customers' monthly energy usage to be sourced by renewable energy that is generated in the same month and ensures the Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) produced by that same renewable energy generation are purchased and retired on their behalf.

We match 100% of participant's monthly electricity use with renewable energy. An additional 0.398 cents will be added to your bill for every kilowatt-hour of energy you use. This premium goes towards the electricity and RECs associated with this program. For an average residential customer, this is usually less than $5.00 per month.

What Types of Renewable Energy Are Eligible?

Under Virginia law solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, wave, tidal, biomass and landfill gas are eligible.

Our portfolio for the 100% Renewable Energy Program includes the following:

  • the Scott, Whitehouse and Woodland solar facilities
  • the Essex, Williamston Speight, HXOap, Cork Oak and Sunflower solar power purchase agreements
  • the Gaston and Roanoke Rapids hydroelectric facilities
  • the Altavista, Hopewell and Southampton biomass units

Each year, we will share the annual renewable resource mix of the energy and RECs used in the previous year. We will include location, amount and type of energy supported by the program, so you know exactly what you’re supporting.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 100% Renewable Energy charge (currently 3.98/kW) could potentially change once a year. The premium will be updated annually to ensure it reflects the current market value of the renewable energy certificates. You will receive advanced notice of price changes.

Also, the total amount of the charge will fluctuate because it matches the total energy you’re using in your home or business each month. The average residential customer uses 1,000 kWh each month and would pay about $3.98, but you may use more or less energy than average. As a result, your charges will be higher or lower than this amount.

This extra charge will appear on your monthly bill as 100% Renewable Energy (RIDER TRG).

It may take up to one billing cycle to complete your enrollment.

That is correct, you are only paying an additional .398 cents per kWh. This program will appear on your bill as two line items:

  • 100% Renewable Energy (RIDER TRG)
  • Rider TRG – Balancing Charge

The 100% Renewable Energy (RIDER TRG) charge is the renewable energy premium that costs an additional .398 cents per kWh.

The Balancing Charge credits the fuel factor, generation base rates and generation riders in amounts to keep non-participants harmless. After 100% Renewable Energy is added to your bill, your normal monthly Generation and Fuel charges are removed and essentially replaced with the TRG Balancing Charge.

Example: If your monthly energy usage is 1,000 kWh, the additional charge on your bill will be $3.98. ($.00398 x 1,000 kWh = $3.98 added to your bill). If your monthly energy usage is 2,000 kWh, the additional charge is $7.96.

Yes, you may cancel your enrollment in this voluntary rate at any time without penalty.

Renewable Energy Certificates, or RECs, are tradeable certificates that prove renewable energy was generated on the purchasers’ behalf. A REC represents one thousand kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy that can be paired with electricity.

Dominion Energy 100% Renewable Energy℠ is only available as a 100% match program and doesn’t offer “block” options. From month to month, customer’s bills will adjust based on energy consumption.
