Innovating for Customers

Managing Your Energy Use

We want to empower our customers to make smart energy choices. So we provide a variety of tools to help you do everything from calculating your carbon footprint to figuring out how much you could save with an electric vehicle.

Autonomous Electric Shuttle Pilot

We're partnering with Fairfax County to test an autonomous electric shuttle in Virginia to learn more about autonomous technology and explore the benefits of the electrification of transportation here in the Commonwealth. Learn more on the Fairfax County Department of Transportation site.

Innovation Lab

Our innovation lab is dedicated to supporting promising new business ventures by providing start-ups with workspace, mentorship, business support services and more. The lab offers everything from co-working space to workshops on important topics, including cyber-security and prototyping. So far, the center has launched more than 15 companies.

FutureHAUS

We are proud to support education and to promote innovation — and often, the two go hand in hand. In 2018, the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation made a $150,000 grant to Virginia Tech's FutureHAUS, a multi-disciplinary project to build a modular solar home that generated more energy than it uses. The 65-student team placed first among 22 universities from around the world in the international Solar Decathlon in Dubai.

Smart Meters

Since 2009, we've installed more than 400,000 smart meters in Virginia and North Carolina. In partnership with our regulators, we are currently working to execute a five-year, approximately $470 million plan, to deploy 2.1 million smart meters to give our customers more control over how and when they use energy. Smart meters offer several advantages:

  • More customer control: You can log into your account to see usage details that give you more control over how and when you use energy.
  • Remote meter turn on and off: We can enable and disable your electric service without having to send an employee to your home or business.
  • Faster power outage detection: Smart meters notify us when your power goes out- and when it's restored.
  • Reduced emissions: More remote readings mean fewer trucks on the road.

100 Homes for 100 Vets

This program weatherized homes for our nation's heroes, in partnership with the Department of Veterans. The energy efficient upgrades included sealing leaks in the attic, ductwork, walls and windows, adding insulation, electrical outlets, C02 alarms, smoke detectors and more. In some cases, we even performed other home repairs and upgrades to improve safety and comfort.

Investing in Community Causes

We are dedicated to improving the physical, social and economic well-being of the communities we serve. In 2022, we donated $45 million to community causes through the Foundation, corporate dollars, and EnergyShare®. We award grants in four focus areas:

  • Basic human needs
  • Environmental stewardship
  • Education
  • Community vitality

Project Plant It!®

This interactive environmental education program teaches children and teens in schools, scout troops, civic clubs and other organizations about the benefits of trees and pollinators to the ecosystem. Project Plant It! was established in 2007 and has distributed thousands of free tree seedlings in our communities. The pollinator program, which includes free wildflower seed packets that attract bees and other pollinators, was added to celebrate the Project Plant It! 15th observance in 2021. Lesson plans and educational resources on the website help connect students to nature in a meaningful way.
