Innovating for Customers

Managing Your Energy Use

We want to empower our customers to make smart energy choices. So we provide a variety of tools to help you do everything from calculating your carbon footprint to figuring out how much you could save with an electric vehicle.

Innovation

Our innovation strategy is designed to support the clean-energy transition by enhancing performance; increasing earnings; accelerating the culture of innovation; and exploring new markets for existing businesses and new lines of business in adjacent or other markets. At our annual Innovation Expo, the 2022 Chair’s Excellence Award went to a team proposing the use of micro-substations to reduce land requirements and reduce costs for data-center developers in Northern Virginia. This is but one example of the many innovations underway at our company — innovations that will keep us at the leading edge of the clean-energy transition.

Innovation Lab

Our innovation lab is dedicated to supporting promising new business ventures by providing start-ups with workspace, mentorship, business support services and more. The lab offers everything from co-working space to workshops on important topics, including cyber-security and prototyping. So far, the center has launched more than 15 companies.

Smart Meters

Since 2009, Dominion Energy has installed more than 2 million smart meters in areas of Virginia and North Carolina. Our investment in smart meter technology will continue across our service area through 2024.

Smart meters offer several advantages:

  • More customer control: You can log into your account to see usage details that give you more control over how and when you use energy.
  • Remote meter turn on and off: We can enable and disable your electric service without having to send an employee to your home or business.
  • Faster power outage detection: Smart meters notify us when your power goes out- and when it's restored.
  • Reduced emissions: More remote readings mean fewer trucks on the road.

Investing in Community

We are dedicated to improving the physical, social and economic well-being of the communities we power every day. In 2023, we contributed $46 million to community causes, including $19 million from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation and our employee giving program.

The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation awards grants in four focus areas:

Employee Giving

Dominion Energy supports employee giving through a matching gifts and volunteer rewards program and supporting volunteerism. Employees and retiree personal charitable contributions to eligible non-profit organizations are eligible for matching gifts and eligible volunteer time can earn rewards to direct to a non-profit organization.

In 2023, our colleagues volunteered 110,000 hours.

Scholarships and Educational Support

We offer a variety of scholarship programs to make education easier to access. In addition to the financial support these programs provide, there is often additional support and professional networking opportunities associated with them.

  • Our Educational Equity Scholarship Program assists students from historically underrepresented communities pursuing undergraduate degrees across our service area.
  • Our Diversity Scholars program is designed to help us build a diverse and inclusive workforce. This $5,000 scholarship, awarded to qualified female and minority candidates, includes a paid summer internship.
  • We award up to 16 two-year scholarships to promising candidates in the nuclear engineering technology program at Three Rivers Community Technical College in Norwich, Connecticut. The scholarships also include paid summer internships at Dominion Energy's Millstone Power Station.
  • The Dominion Energy Credit Union Scholarship provides educational funds for members of the credit union who are enrolling as full-time students in an accredited college or university.

We continued to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in 2022 through the six-year, $25-million Dominion Energy HBCU Promise® , and to support diverse students through the six-year, $10-million Dominion Energy Educational Equity Scholarship program. We also announced two new programs:

  • The Building Hispanic Talent Initiative® , a three-year, $2-million partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities; and
  • Promesa: The Hispanic Higher Education InitiativeSM, a three-year, $1-million-plus partnership with seven colleges and universities.
