South Carolina employee, David Malone, has always been driven to give back to his community. And now, the company truck he has driven for years as a construction inspector is about to support his passion for service in an entirely new way.

David’s retired company truck is being donated to support the Lake City community and the many Dominion Energy customers David and his comrades protect.

David joined the company in 1989 while seeking a stable job to support his family that would also allow him to pursue his passion outside of work as a volunteer firefighter for the South Lynches Fire Department (SLFD) in Lake City.

"What motivates me is life is short; people don’t want to know how much you know; they want to know how much you care,” Malone said. “Your actions speak so loud I can’t hear a word you’re saying. Let your actions speak for you.”

Fire service runs deep in the Malone family. In the 1950s, David’s grandfather helped start SLFD. His father and brother also served as dedicated firemen. David is now marking more than 40 years at the station, currently serving as the assistant fire chief.

“We do any type of emergency incident that you can imagine,” he said. “Lifesaving is the most rewarding part of the work I do with the department. We see people in their worst times, and our goal is to leave them better than we found them, and to save what we can.”

The SLFD is run by six paid employees and has more than 100 volunteer firefighters. Operating a fleet of firefighting vehicles with specialty equipment for different emergency situations, the SLFD has 12 engines, five tankers, three rescue trucks, one aerial truck, three brush trucks and two water rescue units. The donated Dominion Energy truck will be used as a brush truck, which are used in emergency situations where larger engines can’t access. They also carry up to 300 gallons of water and emergency response tools.

Malone shared that working at the fire department, along with his role at Dominion Energy, feels like life has come full circle. When he applied for a position as an apprentice journeyman, he did so on recommendations from fellow volunteer firemen who also worked for the company.

With decades of service under his belt, the company is proudly celebrating David’s service by way of a special donation. “We thank Dominion for always giving back. It means a lot to the department, and it will allow us to do what we do protect our community,” David said.

“We should all try to give back to our community in some form. Our country was built on community, people helping people.”
