With a new offshore wind industry taking shape in Virginia, the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation has launched a Wind for Students Program through grant funding to the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project to support wind energy education in Virginia. The Wind for Students Program builds on the Foundation’s successful partnership with NEED, which has administered the Dominion Energy Solar for Students Program since its launch in 2015.

As part of the Wind for Students Program, the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation and NEED are working together to bring curriculum, teacher training and hands-on wind energy kits to Virginia’s schools. In 2022, two schools or educational institutions in the Eastern region of Virginia will be selected to receive a micro-wind turbine installation which also incorporates solar panels and energy storage batteries. An online data display also will be available to show the installation’s output.

The installation will be an ARIS Power Unit similar to the ones pictured below:

These installations will support wind energy education through applied learning by allowing students to observe onsite energy generation and to analyze the data from the operation of micro-wind turbine installation.
