Nuclear Facilities
Dominion Energy Nuclear Overview
Safe and Reliable Nuclear Energy
Nuclear energy remains one of our region’s most reliable, emission-free energy sources, which is why more than 40% of the electricity we generate comes from our nuclear power stations.
Our nuclear facilities are ranked among the best in the industry, operating with a focus on safety, security and continuous improvement, all while meeting your community’s energy needs.
Clean Energy with Minimal Environmental Impact
Unlike other sources of electricity generation, nuclear power plants emit no greenhouse gases. We operate two nuclear power stations in Virginia—Surry Power Station and North Anna Power Station. Both stations are designed to operate safely and responsibly while preserving their surrounding natural environments.

Millstone Nuclear Power Station
Producing nearly half of Connecticut's energy and enough electricity to power 2 million homes, our Millstone power station provides New England with reliable, affordable, clean energy. In fact, over 90% of Connecticut's carbon-free electricity comes from this facility.

North Anna Nuclear Power Station
Located on a 1,000-acre site in Louisa County, this power station uses Lake Anna as its cooling water reservoir. Dominion Energy created the 13,000-acre lake, now a popular recreational site for activities such as fishing, swimming and boating. With 200 miles of shoreline, it also supports a vibrant community, including summer homes, marinas and campgrounds.

Surry Nuclear Power Station
Nestled on 840 acres in Surry County along the James River, Surry Power Station neighbors the Hog Island Wildlife Management Area. These preserved wetlands are home to diverse plant and animal species and are a favorite spot for nature enthusiasts.

How Nuclear Energy Works
Nuclear energy is a powerful and efficient source of electricity. The process starts with enriched uranium fuel pellets, each about the size of a fingertip. These tiny pellets pack the energy equivalent of a ton of coal, three 50-gallon barrels of oil, or 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas.
The pellets are sealed into strong metal tubes called nuclear fuel rods, which are grouped into assemblies. Over 100 assemblies are placed into the reactor core, where nuclear fission—the splitting of uranium atoms - creates immense heat.
The heat turns water into steam, which powers turbine generators to produce electricity. After generating electricity, the steam is cooled back to water using nearby water sources, and the process is repeated.
Advanced Safety Measures
We incorporate stringent safety protocols to ensure the secure operation of its nuclear plants. Through the Nuclear Energy Institute’s FLEX program, we added portable backup systems, including generators, pumps and hoses, housed in on-site hardened buildings. These systems provide an additional layer of protection and readiness in case of severe events, ensuring the station's continued safety.
A Commitment to the Future
Our nuclear power stations play a critical role in providing clean, affordable, and reliable electricity for families and businesses. By leveraging state-of-the-art technology and maintaining a steadfast commitment to safety, we proudly serve you and your community while protecting the environment using nuclear energy.
