Lisa, a senior sustainability specialist manages our Workplace Sustainability program which aims to engage our employees to make our workplaces “greener” through programs like composting and recycling, building efficiency, and innovation.

Where does your interest in sustainability come from?

When I was a little girl, my parents took me to several National Parks to become a Junior Ranger, and I took the pledge to “explore, learn, and protect” our environment, something I still get to do today!

Why do you love what you do?

I have an amazing and diverse job – some days I’m digging through trash and running Zero Waste Events, other days I’m working with local nonprofits to donate furniture and supplies from our office buildings to organizations that can give them a “sustainable second life.” I also get to work on fun educational campaigns, like our “Sustainability Lessons from our Pets” series we’ve kicked off this year. Every day is different, and the work is very rewarding.

"Clean energy is the path to a more resilient, reliable, and healthier future for ourselves and the next generations to come."

Do you think people will be surprised to learn that roles like yours exist within an energy company?

Yes! I was equally surprised – several other employees and I built our Workplace Sustainability program from scratch, with tremendous support from different groups within the company like Facilities, Environmental, and Innovation. I feel like I’ve had a wonderful opportunity to reach out to different business areas and expand my career, and Dominion Energy has been incredibly open to embracing new programs and ideas. Furthermore, Workplace Sustainability is not just a job title: Our Workplace Sustainability Advocates represent employees across the company, in all types of positions, who are passionate about improving sustainability in the workplace.

Why is clean energy important to our future?

The US – and the world! – needs clean and equitable energy solutions to improve our environment and our communities. Clean energy is the path to a more resilient, reliable, and healthier future for ourselves and the next generations to come.

What does (workplace) sustainability mean to you?

Workplace sustainability is a collaborative movement to improve our environmental impact by making active, conscious daily choices. Whether that’s turning off a light when you leave the room (or programming lights to turn off automatically!), or sorting your waste between donation, recycling, and compost, we can all cultivate a more sustainable mindset through intentional, sustainable decision-making.
