Dominion Energy is investing in the community to promote sustainability and energy efficiency. For the second year, Dominion Energy is working with Four Cities Compact Carpentry Program to teach students how to build an energy efficient home. Through this program, carpentry students from this career technical school covering Barberton, Norton, Wadsworth and Copley school districts gain real-world experience by building a residential home. Dominion Energy provided a $20,000 grant for the school to integrate energy-efficient upgrades.
"Teaching the next generation the importance of energy efficiency is a good start to positively affect climate change. When we teach them how to incorporate it into their daily lives, that's when it becomes truly impactful for future generations," said Dominion Energy's energy efficiency program coordinator Mari Cyngier. "We're excited to work with the Four Cities Compact build for a second year in a row. We're committed to spreading the word about efficiency to homeowners and to provide an educational opportunity for these students. We believe it will pay dividends in our community when they graduate and move into their future successful careers."
The seniors in the program complete the home build from foundation to roof and everything in between. Once they build the home, the school will auction it. The home is 80% complete, and the auction will take place in early June with open houses scheduled a few weeks before. The proceeds of the auction will help fund the program next year.
Energy efficient upgrades include:
Once the home is completed a final blower door test will determine its HERS® (Home Energy Rating System) score. To perform this test, our partner, CLEAResult will fix a powerful fan into the frame of an exterior door, pulling all the air out of the house to lower the air pressure inside. This test will reveal the air infiltration rate of the home and show where any air leaks may be hiding. The home will receive a HERS® home energy rating which signifies how efficiently it's operating. “Last year’s home achieved a HERS rating of 47, which means it's 47% more efficient than a standard new home. This year’s home is on track to be even more energy efficient,” said Cyngier.
