Dayana Martinez, a South Carolina-based energy customer assistance outreach assistant at Dominion Energy, was among more than 260 people from across the nation who gathered Feb. 16 on Capitol Hill to advocate for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) during LIHEAP Action Day.

Martinez, who works closely with customers who receive assistance from LIHEAP, is a daughter of immigrants. She draws on her personal experience in support of the federally funded program.

"My experience with LIHEAP Action Day was one of pure passion," Martinez said. "All the people that took time from their schedule to participate in this meaningful and common goal was a true example of how important LIHEAP is.”

Hosted by the National Energy & Utility Affordability Coalition (NEUAC), the annual event allows utilities and human service organizations to visit with elected officials who represent their communities and mobilize support for LIHEAP. This year's in-person format was the first since 2020.

"Being a first-generation American truly allows me the privilege to appreciate how critical the LIHEAP funding is,” Martinez said. “Working with our customers in need reconfirms that. The energy was impactful and almost breathtaking at times when sharing the stories of what we see day to day.”

In 2022, over 10,000 Dominion Energy South Carolina customers received more than $11 million in energy assistance funds through LIHEAP and other utility bill assistance programs.

"Our participation in LIHEAP Action Day is critical to our daily work, connecting our neighbors in need with critical energy assistance," said Kaytee Watson, manager of customer assistance at Dominion Energy. "We had another successful year of meetings with state policymakers. During our visits, we were able to share the positive impact LIHEAP makes on the lives of their constituents, ask for continued support and highlight our partnership with the State’s Office of Economic Opportunity and community action agencies that administer the program."
