Highlighting our Volunteers of the Year
This article is about:
Mary Ann Wright & Bridgit Broll, two of our 2023 Volunteer of the Year recipients, share what volunteering means to them.Mary Ann, a Customer Assistance Program Supervisor at Dominion Energy, is being honored as a Volunteer of the Year for her commitment to helping the community, especially when it comes to making the environment better for future generations.
I started volunteering in 2016. I became a Teacher’s Supply Closet volunteer and Board of Directors member shortly after and fell in love with what Teachers’ Supply Closet does for teachers and students in the Tri-County Area of South Carolina.
It is important to support teachers, who give so much of themselves and their personal resources to support their students. I believe in rewarding people who do the work and walk the walk. There is a disparity with teachers being equitably compensated for the great service they render, and I feel honored to help them help their students through Teachers’ Supply Closet.
It is awesome to be hands-on serving teachers during the teacher shopping days and working with the very dedicated volunteers who are former educators and committed community members. My beloved and earthly departed parents inspire me to want to give back because they always encouraged me to help others. "It doesn’t matter what position you’re in, or who they are – Mary Ann, if you can help someone, just help them.” This advice came from two people who excelled through many obstacles and challenges. My father joined the United States military in 1946 while it was still segregated – they were both driving forces for our family during the Civil Rights Era and transitioning through desegregation.
Looking at it from a historical perspective, my father was among the first in the U.S. Air Force to achieve the rank of Chief Master Sergeant which was created by Congress as a part of the Career Compensation Act of 1958, and my mother was a dedicated Family Services volunteer on the military base. Their journey was never easy or convenient, yet my parents consistently passed on compassionate wisdom, and through everything, they always modeled service to others.
Muhammad Ali and several others have quoted, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Working in Customer Assistance Programs for several decades has raised my personal and corporate awareness of purposeful things I can do to make a positive impact.
Bridgit Broll, Gas Operations Supervisor in Canton, Ohio, is being recognized as a Volunteer of the Year for her dedication to helping those in her community.
I volunteer with many organizations including Big Brothers Big SistersThe Diversity Center of Northeast OhioThe Maltz Museum Stop the Hate, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, and finally BC Educational Center. I am a founder and the vice chair for the BC Educational Center – a community center that provides all ages educational classes ranging from theater to skilled trades at no cost to the entire community. Our mission is to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion so students from all backgrounds can achieve their highest potential while providing opportunities for career pathways. I am also a fulltime licensed therapeutic foster parent which is first and foremost my favorite and most rewarding effort.
I have been volunteering for about ten years now and it is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I always describe volunteering as “if not you than who.” We need everyone to step up and help do our part in revitalizing our communities, which starts with volunteering. Not only is it a humbling experience but it also helps build important relationships and creates unity within your community.
Being able to help provide free education to the community is so important. Where I was born and raised most of us could not afford to go to college or trade school – I had to join the Army to attend college for that very reason. Being behind the scenes to help people in my community achieve their career and educational goals is rewarding beyond measure, something you cannot really put into words.
I want to see everyone succeed and I want to make a difference even if it is just one person at a time. Volunteering gives me a sense of pride and gives me a sense of insight into the world around me. I love helping people and giving them a positive outlook from any perspective. If you do not know where to start think of something you are passionate about and reach out to an organization near you. There are always volunteer efforts you can get involved in.
