Three Things to Know About Battery Storage

Published: 8/1/2023 2 Likes

Battery storage is supporting our mission of safely providing reliable, affordable, clean energy.

This article is about:

Peaks in solar output don’t always align with peaks in our customers’ electricity use. We are deploying battery storage resources at some of our solar projects. This gives us the opportunity to charge the batteries during times of excess power production and then tap into them when needed.

We all want to know that when we flip a light switch on or turn on our air conditioning in the heat of summer, that we can count on having the electricity we need. Utility-scale battery storage is one way we are supporting reliable service for our customers.

At one of our projects, Scott Solar, solar panels generate energy that we send to the grid. When the panels are producing the most energy, any excess energy can be stored in large batteries that look like shipping containers. Later, we can then use the energy stored in the batteries to help meet the energy needs of our customers.

By pairing solar and storage as a part of this project, we’re also gathering valuable data and insights that can inform our plans for additional energy storage in the future. Here are three things you should know as we look to add battery storage to more renewable energy projects in the future.

Batteries Help Support a Reliable, Affordable, and Clean Energy Grid

According to the International Energy Agency, solar has become one of the cheapest sources of new electricity generation. However, the electricity these resources generate is dependent on the weather. Pairing solar with battery storage means we have an added layer of reliability and resiliency for when the sun isn’t shining.

How does it work? When the sun is shining, and the solar panels are generating more power than our customers need, we can store excess energy in the batteries. Later, we can discharge that stored energy onto the grid when it is needed.

Unlike some forms of energy storage, batteries can be discharged in a matter of seconds at the push of a button – giving us immediate access to the energy we need to reliably serve our customers.

As we use more electricity to power things like electric heat pumps and electric vehicles, the flexibility offered by battery storage resources will help align intermittent renewable power production with fluctuations in customer demand.

Battery Technology is Safe

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day like our phones, tablets, laptops, handheld power tools and electric vehicles. We also use lithium-ion batteries for energy storage, but the ones we use are much larger.

Safety is our top priority and incorporated into every aspect of these projects, from planning and engineering to ongoing monitoring and maintenance. Before any battery storage project is brought online, extensive testing is done to ensure that it can safely connect to the grid. For added assurance, we monitor the batteries 24/7 and are always keeping an eye on the health of the batteries.

We go above and beyond industry standards to ensure that these projects are safe for our employees and the communities we serve.

"I live 10 minutes from one of these projects. And our employees live and work in the communities we serve, so safety is important to all of us."

Battery Storage is a Key Part of the Clean Energy Future

We envision a significant deployment of utility-scale batteries in Virginia through 2035 and beyond. Our deployment plans are designed to ensure customers benefit from advancements in storage technology, which is quickly evolving, as well as continued cost efficiencies. The use of these resources will also align with more intermittent renewable resources like solar and wind coming online.

How we generate and provide energy to power your every day is changing. The energy grid looks very different than it did five years ago, and we continue to incorporate innovative technologies to adapt to customers’ needs. Adding battery storage to the right projects helps ensure reliable power for all our customers.
