Grants for Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation are distributed in four focus areas and are limited to organizations defined as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.

Foundation grants are funded by shareholder dollars, and additional grants may be made directly from the corporation to sponsor special events that benefit a non-profit organization.

Most grants are in the $1,000 to $15,000 range, while higher amounts may be awarded when a program is an exceptional fit with corporate business.

Grant Review Process

Grant applications are accepted online. Requests are considered quarterly by our Community Investment Boards. The total review process may take from two to six months. Groups requesting large or first-time grants should allow additional time for review.

Requests from public and private K-12 schools are considered on a competitive basis through the Dominion Environmental Education and Stewardship grants program. Applications are accepted starting in January and decisions are announced during April.

We often receive funding requests far in excess of our Foundation and corporate contribution budgets. Regrettably we must often decline support for otherwise worthy proposals. Such a response does not reflect on Dominion Energy's view of the value of the organization or its services.

Application Process

When applying for a grant or contribution, we recommend that you carefully review the information below regarding eligibility requirements. If you think your organization meets all of those requirements, you can start the application process by completing the Eligibility Quiz.

If the quiz confirms your eligibility, you will receive a password that is assigned only to your organization and will enable you to access our online application. You will be able to save and edit your applications prior to submittal. The total review process may take from two to six months. Groups requesting large or first-time grants should allow additional time for review.

All applicants are asked to upload:

  • List of other sources of financial support (both committed and pending)
  • Current board members and affiliations

Organizations that have not received funding from the Dominion Energy Foundation in the past three years are also asked to upload:

  • Latest IRS determination letter indicating 501(c)(3) status
  • Most recent audited financial statement

Grant Eligibility

The primary interest of our foundation is to support programs and specific projects. Consequently, support of capital campaigns is limited and provided on an exceptional basis. We do not typically fund university research projects or endow chairs.

Foundation grant support is available to:

  • Not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organizations
  • Organizations within geographic areas (listed below) where Dominion Energy provides electricity or natural gas service, or has significant facilities or business interests
  • Organizations that focus on education, environment, culture and the arts, civic and community development, and health and human services

Foundation grant support is NOT available to:

  • Tangible benefits, including utility payments to Dominion Energy or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates
  • Individuals
  • Religious programs of churches or other sectarian organizations
  • Fraternal, political, advocacy or labor organizations
  • Projects or organizations that are not located within geographic areas where Dominion Energy provides electricity or natural gas service, or has significant facilities or business interests
  • Fund-raising events (dinners, lunches, etc.)
  • Golf tournaments or other sporting events
