Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station
Overview
As demand for electricity continues to grow, we all deserve projects that provide reliable power and create lasting local benefits. This facility will provide the needed electricity to our grid while also creating new jobs, supporting local businesses, and contributing to economic growth in West Virginia.
The Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station will consist of two 2-on-1 combined cycle units that will use natural gas to generate approximately 2,600 megawatts (MW) of baseload, around-the-clock, power to serve 650,000 homes.
Site Location
Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station will be located in Grant County, West Virginia, with a footprint of ~130 acres at our existing Mt. Storm Power Station property. This facility will be in addition to, not a replacement of, the existing Mt. Storm Power Station.
Locating this facility near existing utilities, such as electric transmission and water, helps minimize impacts to the greatest extent possible.
Key Facts
Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station will generate nearly 2.6 GW of power. 2.6 GW is enough power up to 650,000 homes.
The project will include two 2-on-1 advanced class combined-cycle units. They are designed to use natural gas with fuel oil as a backup.
Combined-cycle units can generate power at different levels. This helps meet your daily needs and provides power when wind and solar aren't available.
The project will use best available technology to help protect people's health and the environment.
How It Works
First, a combustion turbine is used to make power.
- Air from outside is pulled into a compressor where it becomes hotter and more pressurized.
- This air is mixed with natural gas and then burned.
- The hot gases expand and move through the turbine, making it spin.
- As the turbine spins, it turns a generator that makes electricity. This electricity is sent to the power grid to supply homes.
Second, leftover heat and gases are used to make more power.
- Extra heat and gases are captured by a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), which uses that heat to make steam.
- The steam flows through a steam turbine, causing it to spin.
- As the turbine spins, it turns another generator that makes electricity. This electricity is sent to the power grid to supply homes.
- After the steam moves through the turbine, it is cooled and turned back into water. The water is then reused in the system.

The Mt. Storm Combined Cycle Station will provide power for up to 650,000 homes and will bring added benefits to local, state, and regional communities.
