McLean Partial Rebuild
230 kV Electric Transmission Project
This project proposes to rebuild a part of an existing 230 kV transmission line. All work will occur in the existing right of way.
Project Details
- The project will replace aging equipment, especially foundations of structures damaged by erosion from the Pimmit Run Stream.
- Located in Fairfax County in the Dranesville District, the section of the line being replaced is about two and a half miles from just east of Route 267 to just south of the Potomac School.
- The lines will continue to be 230 kilovolts (kV).
- This project will require approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC).
- Public outreach will begin in the fall of 2026. The project team plans to file the application with the SCC in November 2026.
- Construction is targeted to begin in summer 2028, and complete by summer 2029.
- There will not be disruption to your electrical service due to this work.

The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) has regulatory authority over all energy providers in Virginia. Among other responsibilities, the SCC validates the need for a proposed line and approves the route and structures. In reviewing a proposed project, the SCC must consider whether potential impacts on scenic assets, historic districts and the environment have been reasonably minimized.
Once this project is submitted to the SCC, we will post our application and provide a link to the SCC's case docket where you will find documents related to the case, as well as information on how to submit comments.
