Frequently Asked Questions

A typical residential customer can offset their entire natural gas carbon footprint by purchasing one $5 block a month, achieving net zero carbon emissions from natural gas usage.

To achieve net zero carbon emissions associated with your natural gas usage, you are encouraged to log in to your customer account to view your average usage.

Project type: Landfill Gas Capture/Combustion
Name: Davis Landfill Gas Offset Project
Location: Layton, Utah
Registry: Climate Action Reserve, (CAR) U.S. Landfill Project Protocol
CarbonRight portfolio total: 27%

When landfill waste decomposes, it produces greenhouse gas emissions. This project captures those emissions before they enter the atmosphere by installing a network throughout the landfill that gathers methane as it is emitted. After the methane is extracted, it is cleaned and used to generate electricity.

Project type: Landfill Gas Capture/Combustion
Name: South Jordan Landfill
Location: South Jordan, Utah
Registry: Climate Action Reserve, (CAR) U.S. Landfill Project Protocol
CarbonRight portfolio total: 23%

This project captures greenhouse gas emissions before entering the atmosphere through a gas collection and control system comprised of an interconnected network of vertical extraction and horizontal wells connected via underground piping to electricity producing generator engines.

Project type: Advanced Formulation Blowing Agents in Foam Manufacturing and Use
Name: Spray Foam Alpha
Location: Arizona
Registry: American Carbon Registry, Project ID: ACR591
CarbonRight portfolio total: 47%

The project activity is the replacement of a high-Global Warming Potential (GWP) blowing agent, namely Pentafluoropropane (HFC-245fa), with a new blowing agent (“Project BA”) in the production and use of foam. The BA is also non-ozone depleting and will replace high-GWP BAs formerly used.

Blowing agents (BAs) are a key ingredient in the production of foam. These BAs contain chemicals that release Green House Gas during manufacture, use, and end-of-life (destruction).

Project type: Improved Forest Management with Verified Removals
Name: 18 Reserves Forest Carbon Project
Location: Ohio
Registry: American Carbon Registry, Project ID: ACR586
CarbonRight portfolio total: 3%

The project is composed of 8,961 acres of mixed hardwood forest that will be managed for the purpose of increased carbon sequestration by foregoing significant timber harvesting and maintaining mature forest cover, among other objectives, such as improving ecosystem resilience, increasing wildlife habitat, reducing invasive species presence, and growing research and monitoring of natural systems. Cleveland Metroparks' (“CMP”) forest holdings contain many valuable ecological, educational, open space, and scenic resource conservation values. The Cleveland Metroparks' forest will be managed to store carbon, conserve and enhance forest health, and ecosystem resilience.

Note: The projects supported by CarbonRight may change over time depending on the availability of carbon offsets.

CarbonRight® is a carbon offset program that allows customers to voluntarily offset carbon emissions from natural gas use in their home or business by supporting projects reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

GreenTherm® is a renewable energy program that provides customers an opportunity to support the production of renewable natural gas (RNG). Renewable natural gas is pipeline-quality gas produced from existing waste streams and a variety of renewable and sustainable biomass sources, capturing and using methane that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere.

ThermWise is an energy conservation program that promotes the use of energy efficient practices and rebates to reduce natural gas usage. The program offers Home Energy Plans in which a home energy expert visits your home to conduct a thorough home energy efficiency analysis. ThermWise offers rebates for energy-efficient appliances and weatherization improvements that are available for existing homes, businesses and builders.

Carbon offsets compensate for emissions from one source, such as your home, by reducing emissions from another source, such as a landfill, so there is no overall increase in emissions. Carbon offsets are an effective tool used by people, companies and governments around the world to combat climate change.

Everyday activities produce emissions, such as driving cars, using electricity or heating our homes. This program allows you to offset certain carbon emissions – those associated with using natural gas – from your home by reducing carbon emissions from other sources.

A typical natural gas home uses about 80 dekatherms (Dth) of natural gas, which produces about 4 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. A typical residential customer can offset their entire natural gas carbon footprint by purchasing one $5 block a month, achieving net zero carbon emissions from natural gas usage.

Everyone has a role to play in combating climate change. Our company is taking bold and important steps every day to achieve our goal of net-zero emissions. This program is an easy way for our customers to join us on our journey and have a positive impact on the environment.

When a qualified carbon mitigation project is completed and reduces emissions from a source, the project developer can sell carbon offsets to a third party through a transparent and independently certified process. These carbon offsets must be independently measured and validated through rigorous standards put in place by carbon offset registries in order to ensure the emission reductions are real, accurate, permanent, and additional to what would be expected from normal day-to-day practices.

We purchase the offsets for this program through a competitive bidding process to make sure they meet the highest standards and provide the best value for our customers.

Participation in the CarbonRight® program is completely voluntary. A typical customer can elect to pay a surcharge of $5 per block per month to completely offset their home’s emissions, or purchase more blocks to offset even more emissions. Participation may be cancelled anytime.

No. We do not make a profit from the program.

No. Customers who do not participate will not pay more for natural gas.

The offsets for this program are independently certified through a rigorous and transparent process by carbon offset registries. Reputable carbon offset registries include the American Carbon Registry and the Climate Action Reserve.
