Can you describe what you do?

My job is to review renewable and other energy related projects, to ensure they play nice with the electrical grid. I am almost like an inspector that ensures that things are done right which allows us to have our lights on, our TV working and our tablets and phones charged whenever we want to.

How did you get to where you are today and where does your interest in clean energy stem from?

I was raised in Senegal, a country located near the Atlantic Coast and famous for being the former capital of the French colony of West Africa. I was blessed to have parents who were well educated and understood the value of having a good education. I came to the U.S. in the fall of 2004 to complete my bachelor’s degree and became very involved with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. This is when I discovered my passion for renewable energy and solar.

How does it make you feel to know that your work will positively impact future generations?

It really makes me feel good about my work and give me a great sense of ownership to know that the work I am doing will impact our climate but also future generations. I wake up every day excited to work toward helping our company meet the goal of increasing the penetration of renewable generation into our system while also maintaining our excellence of providing a safe, reliable and resilient electric grid.

Clean energy is important to me because I believe in taking care of the environment we live in, ensuring that we are not harming our environment through our actions. Our environment is just like our home or our car, if we do not take care of it, it will crumble or break down. Over the years and countless scientific studies, we have learned that not doing so impacts our climate, our lives, the lives of our neighbors, our children as well as their health, prosperity.

Why is it exciting to work in an innovative field?

It is very exciting to work in such an innovative field that touches things like battery storage, electric vehicle deployment and more. There is so much going on, which make our core value of “Embrace Change” make even more sense.

Seeing how technology can help make our environment cleaner and more sustainable, reduce harmful effects caused by human actions on the environment, for our sake and to ensure a brighter future for our families and our children is also very exciting.

You helped build solar projects in Africa before working at Dominion Energy; how has that impacted your view on solar today?

I spent some time working with a renewable energy start up that built solar systems in Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The work I did there meant a lot to me, because what we were building provided electricity to schools, hospitals in poor communities and made it possible for students to have access to computers and the internet, something very important for success today.

This forever changed my view of how important it is to have access to reliable and clean energy.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The thing I enjoy most about my job is learning the in and out of renewable technologies and working to help integrate them into our electric grid without sacrificing things that our customers cherish the most — the reliability of the electric grid.
