Smart Thermostat

Customers have control over their energy usage like never before. Whether it’s managing an ENERGY STAR® certified smart thermostat from your phone or swapping out an old-fashioned incandescent bulb for a long-lasting ENERGY STAR® certified LED, today’s technology gives you the chance to control your usage and your bill. An ENERGY STAR® certification is a stamp of approval, so you can rest assured knowing you’re getting a trustworthy product designed to help you save energy and money.

With summer just around the corner, now is the time to consider how you can make your home more energy efficient. Large projects like installing an ENERGY STAR® qualified HVAC system or adding attic insulation may deliver significant savings, but something as simple as adjusting your thermostat or changing a light bulb can help make a difference too.

Here are some ways to get your home working smarter, not harder, this summer:

Try a Smart Thermostat

A new smart thermostat makes it easier to manage your home’s temperature and energy usage. Most of them will manage it for you. They offer other great benefits as well. They take local weather into account, give you reminders to change your HVAC filter and even send you a monthly report to show your savings.

ENERGY STAR® certified smart thermostats are available to residential electric customers through the EnergyWise Savings Store with significant discounts off retail. The online marketplace also offers guidelines to help ensure your thermostat is compatible with your HVAC system.

New Lighting

A single light bulb might not make a huge difference at first, but the savings add up. ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs are much more efficient and long lasting than traditional incandescent lights. Some smart bulbs give you control over brightness, hue and even color. Instead of replacing all your bulbs at once, try to get in the habit of replacing older bulbs with modern LEDs when they go out. Not only will you save energy, you’ll get brighter light and find yourself replacing bulbs less often. Many varieties of LED bulbs are available to residential electric customers through the EnergyWise Savings Store at a fraction of retail cost.

Change Your Habits

There are even more ways to lower your energy usage without spending a dime. Adjusting your thermostat more often will result in significant savings. During the summer, adjust your thermostat to 78° or higher when the temperatures start to rise. Set it even higher (80° – 83° F) while away from home. Avoid setting your thermostat below 78 degrees to keep your cooling system running less often.

Be vigilant in turning things off they aren’t being used. Lights and televisions are often left on when no one is in the room. Install advanced power strips, which include built-in features that significantly reduce the amount of energy used by your home office and entertainment center devices when not in use. Several options are available for purchase at our online marketplace, available exclusively to residential electric customers.

Keep an eye on your month-to-month usage by looking at your Dominion Energy bill by accessing your account online.
