We're putting our vision to be the most sustainable energy company in the country into action.
As we celebrate Earth Week and Earth Day, we’re committed to the big and little things that make a difference in our communities.
This article is about:
At Dominion Energy, our vision is to become the most sustainable energy company in the country. Powering that transformation are committed teams across the country who are putting that vision into action.
While we’re making big changes to power more homes and businesses with clean-energy sources like wind, solar, nuclear, renewable natural gas, and more, we’re also supporting environmental stewardship initiatives, educating the next generation of students about protecting natural resources, and implementing workplace sustainability initiatives.
As we celebrate Earth Week, we’re highlighting a few of the efforts helping us to reach a more sustainable future, together.
In Utah, we’re excited for Spring because it means the plant life at the Youth Garden Project is coming alive. Through this organization, more than 1,600 Grand County youth engage in hands-on learning, making connections between what they’re taught in the classroom and the real-world impacts of food and farming.
Emily Robertson, Executive Director for the Youth Garden Project noted: "With Dominion Energy's support, so many students will get a chance to learn about and meaningfully contribute to our community and food system while bolstering other valuable skills and knowledge that support their development along the way.”
Since 2013, our Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation has given nearly $9 million to nonprofit organizations and schools, supporting projects that educate students and the public about environmental stewardship, protecting and preserving natural habitats, and making nature more accessible for all. In 2021, $1.5 million was distributed across 10 states. Applications for the 2022 Environmental Education and Stewardship Grants will open later this year.
Durham, North Carolina will soon welcome new publicly accessible nature preserve thanks to work from the Eno River Association, supported by funds from a Dominion Energy Environmental Education and Stewardship Grant. The 56-acre preserve will make nature more accessible to thousands of local visitors, preserve natural habitats along the land’s stream and riverfronts, and educate students and the public about environmental stewardship through the association’s youth and adult education programs.
“Ensuring the public has access to safe green space for recreation, relaxation, and respite is more important than ever before. This new preserve will provide our community free access to miles of walking trails, streams, and river frontage. We are so grateful to Dominion Energy’s partnership on this project which will help alleviate pressure on nearby parks, preserve our natural resources, and educate the public on the importance of environmental stewardship,” said Jessica Sheffield, Executive Director of the Eno River Association.
The preserve is expected to be completed in January 2023.
Our efforts to become the most sustainable energy company in the country go beyond clean energy. We’re also making our workplace more sustainable. In our downtown Richmond headquarters, we’ve installed a Babylon Micro-Farm™, which will grow fresh produce for our employee café.
Each year, this indoor farming unit will save an estimated 97.5 pounds of food waste and 13,000 gallons of water and avoid 7.13 pounds of fertilizer runoff.
We’ve also installed a Micro-Farm™ at Church Hill Activities and Tutoring (CHAT), a non-profit serving youth in Richmond’s East End. In addition to growing and harvesting produce through its workforce development programs, CHAT is using the indoor farm to expose young adults to skills needed for the indoor-farming industry.
In Ohio, we’re working with Four Cities Compact Carpentry Program to build its first energy-efficient home. Through this program, carpentry students from a technical school covering Barberton, Norton, Wadsworth and Copley school districts gain real-life experience by building a residential home. A $20,000 grant from Dominion Energy made it possible to integrate energy-efficient upgrades.
“We’re committed to energy efficiency and savings programs with our residential customers,” said Dominion Energy’s energy efficiency program coordinator Mari Cyngier. “When we heard about the Four Cities Compact build, we thought it was the perfect chance to spread the word about efficiency for homeowners and to provide an educational opportunity for these students. We believe it will pay dividends in our community when they graduate and move into their future successful careers.”
Reducing the amount of energy used in your home is just one way you can shrink your environmental footprint. And even if you aren’t building a new home, upgrades can make your house more energy-efficient.
Birds play a vital role in a thriving ecosystem. They act as pollinators, helping to fertilize plants, while controlling insects and pests.
Audubon South Carolina, a state branch of the National Audubon Society, works to track bird migration patterns to understand why birds leave certain environments, where they’re traveling to, the threats they’re facing, and much more. With this knowledge, researchers can strategize the best ways to conserve bird populations.
Through an Environmental Education and Stewardship grant, Audubon South Carolina has installed migration towers to assist with this important tracking.
