A new documentary film: Downing of a Flag

Dominion Energy is a corporate sponsor of a new documentary exploring the Confederate flag’s impact on the people, politics and perceptions of South Carolina and beyond.

“Downing of a Flag,” produced by South Carolina ETV (SCETV) in partnership with Strategic Films and Susie Films, examines how a racially motivated 2015 church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, which killed state Sen. Rev. Clementa Pinckney and eight Black parishioners, served as the catalyst for the flag’s long-debated removal.

The issues explored in the film align with Dominion Energy’s long-term commitment to social justice, equality, diversity and inclusion.

“Dominion supporting this speaks volumes about their commitment to South Carolina,” said state Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter. “I have to say, based on not just support of Downing of a Flag, but other kinds of corporate community contributions that Dominion has been involved in, they have really put their money where their mouth is. I look forward to Dominion continuing in this state as one of our major corporate sponsors trying to make a difference in communities across South Carolina.”

In conjunction with the premiere of the film, South Carolina ETV (SCETV) and the ETV Endowment of South Carolina hosted four community engagement events across the state.

Each event featured a panel discussion with clips from the documentary sparking conversation about themes and questions presented in the film.

Similar to these panels, we have been hosting our own discussions over the past year to encourage courageous conversations among employees and to make employees feel that they can bring their whole selves to work.

“I was skeptical when we first started having conversations in the workplace surrounding race,” said Dominion Energy Manager of Media Relations Rhonda O’Banion, who spoke on behalf of the company at one of the community events. “I thought these conversations were going to be safe, sanitized, high-level, corporate speak, but it was everything but that. It was truly candid conversation, real talk, raw talk – very sensitive talk – about issues surrounding race and other very important matters.”

The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is airing the documentary on more than 80 percent of its affiliates across the country, but you don’t have to wait for the film to air on a network near you.
