Distribution vs. Transmission
Know the difference between types of power lines
Distribution Lines
Distribution lines are lower voltage power lines that carry electricity from local substations to homes and businesses. These can be located underground or overhead on utility poles. Dominion Energy has over 84,000 miles of distribution lines.
Transmission Lines
Transmission lines are larger than distribution lines and carry electricity across great distances. These high-voltage power lines are attached to large structures and transmit electricity from a power plant (that produces or generates electricity) to a substation. Transmission lines are also used to carry electricity from Dominion Energy's substations to the towns and communities we serve. Because of their high voltage and large structures, transmission lines require more space to safely operate and to ensure the reliability of our equipment.

Distribution vs. Transmission
One way to better understand the difference between transmission and distribution lines is to compare them to roads. Instead of cars, electric lines carry energy. Distribution lines can be compared to single-lane roads or streets running through streets and neighborhoods. Transmission lines are similar to highways; designed to carry a lot of energy across several miles.
