How can we help you?
Cumberland Energy Center
Overview
As demand for electricity continues to grow, our communities need power that is affordable, reliable, and creates lasting local benefits. This facility would deliver cost-effective power for families and businesses while supporting jobs in the region. Dominion Energy is investing locally to help strengthen the economy with reliable careers and a steady supply of affordable electricity our customers can count on today and into the future.
Cumberland Energy Center would consist of two 2-on-1 combined cycle units that would use natural gas to generate approximately 3,000 MW of baseload, around-the-clock, power to serve up to 750,000 homes.
Site Location
The Cumberland Energy Center will be built on approximately 150 acres off Duncan Store Road in Cumberland County, Virginia.
Key Facts
The facility will produce nearly 3,000 megawatts of electricity – enough to power up to 750,000 homes.
The project will include two 2-on-1 advanced class combined-cycle units. They are designed to use natural gas with fuel oil as a backup.
Combine-cycle units can generate power at different levels. This helps meet your daily needs and provides power when wind and solar aren't available.
This project will use best available technology to help protect people's health and the environment.
How It Works
First, a combustion turbine is used to make power.
- Air from outside is pulled into a compressor where it becomes hotter and more pressurized.
- This air is mixed with natural gas and then burned.
- The hot gases expand and move through the turbine, making it spin.
- As the turbine spins, it turns a generator that makes electricity. This electricity is sent to the power grid to supply homes.
Second, leftover heat and gases are used to make more power.
- Extra heat and gases are captured by a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), which uses that heat to make steam.
- The steam flows through a steam turbine, causing it to spin.
- As the turbine spins, it turns another generator that makes electricity. This electricity is sent to the power grid to supply homes.
- After the steam moves through the turbine, it is cooled and turned back into water. The water is then reused in the system.
