Frequently Asked Questions

A substation is a facility that changes voltage from high to low or from low to high, among other important functions. When electric transmission lines enter a substation, the voltage is lowered using transformers. The lower voltage electricity is delivered to customers using electric distribution lines.

To accommodate future load growth and meet growing energy demand, Dominion Energy will install new equipment at the Great Bridge Substation in Chesapeake, Virginia. The project will strengthen grid stability and improve system resiliency. This work will help ensure the continued delivery of safe, reliable, and affordable electric service to your community.

Work will be completed during permitted construction hours. You can expect to see crews on foot or in vehicles accessing the right of way.

The substation footprint and security fence will expand by approximately 0.1 acres on Dominion Energy-owned property.
