This article is about:
How to avoid preparing and cooking meals over a hot stove.
How to more efficiently wash and dry laundry.
How to reduce natural gas use for heating water.
1. Avoid opening the oven. Every time the door of an oven is opened, more natural gas is used to replace the heat lost.
2. Cook an entire meal in the oven. Save energy by cooking multiple dishes in the oven to minimize the amount of time needed to have the heat on.
3. Enjoy no-heat recipes. Don’t feel like cooking? Reheat leftovers or try no-heat meals like chicken or tuna salads, wraps, subs or cheese boards. There are even no-bake dessert recipes.
4. Dry full Loads. Save natural gas and money by combining your loads.
5. Use full loads only. Wash and dry a full load of clothes.
6. Keep the lint screen clean. Clean the lint filter after every load. Unless the lint screen is cleaned, the dryer will not operate at top efficiency.
7. Give your dryer some time off. Consider outdoor line-drying on sunny, breezy days to save natural gas.
8. Lower the Thermostat. Set your water heater to "warm," or 120 degrees F, which is high enough for normal household needs. The 120-degree setting saves energy, slows lime buildup, and reduces the risk of burns from hot water. Tankless water heaters are generally more energy efficient.
9. Use less hot water. Take shorter showers instead of baths. Switch to lower wash water temperatures for all your laundry and rinse in cold water.
10. Run the dishwasher only when full. Use the energy-saving setting for drying or let dishes air dry.
