January 2023
A message from our North Carolina Electric leadership to you.
This article is about:
We believe Actions Speak Louder. We will remain steadfast in our dedication to serve you in 2023 and beyond – and continue to improve your overall customer experience.
In 2022, Dominion Energy remained committed to our mission of delivering safe, reliable, affordable, and increasingly clean energy to you.
Our relentless focus on safety produced good results. As always, we put your safety as well as the safety of our colleagues first. We still have work to do because even one accident is one too many.
We continue to make reliability a priority. We installed new and rebuilt transmission and distribution lines; constructed new and expanded existing substations; and placed outage-prone distribution lines underground. We also worked to enhance the resiliency of the electric distribution grid and its ability to accommodate the increase in renewable generation. And our power stations operated exceptionally well – meeting a new record for a summer load.
When Winter Storm Frida, Hurricane Ian and consecutive weeks of summer thunderstorms impacted our service area, we took an all-hands-on-deck approach and worked around-the-clock to restore power safely and quickly to those who experienced outages. And after these storms, we reviewed lessons learned and made improvements to our processes and communication efforts.
More than 600,000 smart meters were installed in 2022 – bringing the total installed to over 1.9 million. These devices enable us to detect power outages and collect meter readings remotely. Understanding the criticality of internet access for all, we helped bring high-speed broadband to unserved and underserved communities in Virginia.
As inflation and fuel prices rise, we continue to look at ways to help our customers reduce energy costs and pay their bills. In Virginia, we voluntarily agreed to recover fuel costs over a longer period to help reduce the effect on customer bills. We also offered energy-assistance programs to our customers, including EnergyShare®. The 40th anniversary of EnergyShare® was celebrated by weatherizing 52 family homes, in addition to providing $6 million in weatherization assistance to income- and age-qualifying customers.
Progress continues toward achieving net zero carbon and methane emissions by 2050. We announced that we would work to achieve net zero for emissions generated downstream by customers and upstream by suppliers. Additionally, we focused on introducing new solar, energy storage and wind to our generating portfolio.
Surry and North Anna Power Stations generated almost one third of the electricity in Virginia and North Carolina. In 2021, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission renewed Surry's operating licenses for an additional 20 years – Unit 1 until 2052 and Unit 2 until 2053. Throughout 2022, we worked on projects to replace or upgrade key pieces of equipment to ensure Surry successfully generates carbon-free electricity through 2053.
We partnered with school districts in Virginia to replace diesel buses in their fleets with electric models and to provide fast-charging solutions. Exploration of other emerging technologies such as advanced, small modular nuclear reactors and hydrogen continues.
We live our core values of Safety, Ethics, Excellence, Embrace Change, and Teamwork. We believe everyone has a right to be treated with dignity, fairness and respect – and everyone has a duty to treat others the same way.
We continued to support historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) through the HBCU Promise, as well as African American students and students from underrepresented communities with Educational Equity Scholarships. This year, we announced the Building Hispanic Talent Initiative, a three-year, $2 million partnership with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) to develop Hispanic/Latino high school students interested in clean energy careers, and the Promesa: Higher Hispanic Education Initiative, a three-year, over $1 million partnership with seven colleges and universities to assist Hispanic/Latino college students.
We believe Actions Speak Louder. We will remain steadfast in our dedication to serve you in 2023 and beyond – and continue to improve your overall customer experience. It is an exciting, transformational time for our company and our industry, and we will work hard every day to not only meet our commitments to you but to also work to be better tomorrow than we are today.
Sincerely,
Edward H. Baine
President, Dominion Energy Virginia
