Dominion Energy and the city of Columbia are partnering to expand public access along the Saluda River.Dominion Energy will donate more than 250 acres of undeveloped riverfront to help the city of Columbia expand public access and increase tourism and economic development along the Saluda River.
Dominion Energy South Carolina President Keller Kissam and Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann announced the agreement in a news conference at Saluda River Riverwalk on Sept. 13.
"We are fortunate to have such a beautiful natural resource running through the Midlands and are excited for people to discover even more of it in the years to come,” said Keller Kissam, president of Dominion Energy South Carolina. "After this announcement, a new slogan for Columbia could be: Rockin' and rollin' on the SBC -- the Saluda, the Broad and the Congaree."
Under a franchise agreement reached earlier this year, Dominion Energy will lease 10 tracts along the Saluda River to the city for $1 per year for a term of 100 years. The terms are similar to an existing agreement along the Saluda River between Dominion Energy and the Riverbanks Zoo.
The properties are located downstream from the Lake Murray dam and will provide Columbia a route to extend the Three Rivers Greenway beyond the Saluda Riverwalk.
Once complete, the greenway will link downtown Columbia with Lake Murray, approximately 11 miles away. The plan will require regulatory approvals.
“Columbia is home to three amazing rivers that should be utilized, accessed, and enjoyed,” Rickenmann said. “This partnership marks a new era of opening up access to our city’s rivers. Thanks to the team at Dominion Energy, and Keller Kissam in particular, for their work to make Columbia a better place to be. This land will pave the way to create spaces for our families to enjoy and features that tourists will flock to.”
In addition to the trail, other new amenities may include outdoor exercise stations, hammocks for relaxed riverfront enjoyment and leisure, and increased public access points for river recreation.
