A line rebuild project in Richland County
To continue to meet the growing demand for safe and reliable energy across Columbia, SC, Dominion Energy South Carolina will be rebuilding an existing electric transmission line in the spring and summer of 2020. This line will be constructed in downtown Columbia and will be supplying power to an upgraded substation that will help serve the growing needs of the downtown Columbia area.
Dominion Energy South Carolina will replace 2 existing 33 kilovolt (kV) lines with approximately 55 wooden structures with one 115 kilovolt (kV) line containing approximately 24 self-supporting galvanized steel structures. The new line will be constructed by Dominion Energy transmission crews, will be designed to meet all modern electric codes and will provide a more resilient and reliable electric feed to downtown Columbia.
Line construction started in March of 2020 and is expected to be completed near the end of 2020.
The line begins at the Williams Street Substation along Williams Street near the EdVenture Children's Museum and will traverse along Williams Street, Blanding Street, Pulaski Street, Taylor Street, and will end at the Park Street substation near the interesting of Park Street and Taylor Street. The line will be build near the roadways on an existing transmission line.
Because the line will be built alongside the roadway, DESC will be working with SCDOT and a Traffic Control Contractor to block a lane of traffic such that the line can constructed safely with as little interruption to the flow of traffic as possible.
