To continue to meet the growing demand for safe and reliable energy across the Northern portion of its service territory, Dominion Energy South Carolina will be rebuilding an existing electric Transmission line. The line is 65 miles in length and runs from the Savannah River up to Lexington, SC. Specifically, the project traverses through Stevens Creek, Edgefield, Trenton, Johnston, Ward, Batesburg-Leesville, Gilbert, and Lexington.

Dominion Energy South Carolina will be replacing the existing 115 kilovolt (kV) wooden poles along this 65-mile corridor with self-supporting galvanized steel structures. The new line will be designed to meet all modern electric codes and will provide a stronger electrical system across DESC service territory as well as provide additional reliability and resiliency to the areas along the route. The rebuild lines will be constructed by contractors of Dominion Energy. At this time, DESC expects there to be no interruptions in power to its customers.

Line construction started in the summer of 2020 and will be completed near the end of 2022. The project is divided into several sub-projects and will be constructed in the following years:

  • 2020: Batesburg-Gilbert & Stevens Creek-Edgefield sections
  • 2021: Batesburg-Ward, Trenton-Edgefield, and Various Sections through Lexington County
  • 2022: Ward-Trenton and Various Sections through Lexington County

The project begins at the Savannah River (Stevens Creek) and traverses in a northeasterly direction through Edgefield, Trenton, Johnston, Ward, Batesburg-Leesville, Gilbert, and ends in Lexington. Starting at the Savannah River and working Northeast towards Lexington, the major roadways crossed by the line are Martintown Road, Sweetwater Road, Augusta Road (Hwy 25), Columbia Road (Hwy 23), Johnston Highway, Ward Avenue (Hwy 193), Ridge Spring Highway, Saluda Avenue (Hwy 178), Summerland Avenue (Hwy 391), Priceville Road, Hwy 378, Wise Ferry Road, Old Chapin Road, and N. Lake Drive.

The vast majority of this route is away from roadways and largely in rural parts of South Carolina. DESC does not expect there to be any major changes to traffic patterns.
