After more than six decades of operation, the wooden H-frame structures and associated components along the nearly six mile line from our New Road Substation to our Middleburg Substation in Prince William, Fauquier and Loudoun counties need to be replaced in order to maintain reliability for our customers.

  • Project area is 5.8 miles long
  • Right of way width is primarily 100 feet wide
  • Current average structure height = 54 feet

  • April 2021 – Crews are nearly finished with phase 1 of the project and will soon begin removing the existing wooden structures to begin replacing them with the new structures.
  • January 2021 – Pole installation for the temporary line is nearly complete. Crews will begin to pull in conductor wire on the temporary line.

Project Goals

Our planned approach is to rebuild this line in a manner that

  • upgrades it to current 115 kilovolt (kV) standards
  • requires no new permanent right of way
  • keeps new structures at comparable heights to existing structures

Overview & Project Description

The New Road-Middleburg 115 kV line was originally built in 1953 using wooden H-frame structures. Although the line and its components have been well-maintained, they are at the end of their service life and need to be replaced to maintain reliability for over 9,000 customers served by the Middleburg Substation.

Because this transmission line is the only one providing power to Middleburg Substation, we will need to install a temporary transmission line to maintain reliable power for our customers while we work in the area. This temporary line will be dismantled at the end of the project.
