Frequently Asked Questions

How do solar and other renewable energy facilities connect to the Dominion Energy electric transmission grid?

All proposed interconnections of electricity generation resources with a capacity of 20 megawatts or more are managed through a comprehensive process involving the generation owner, transmission owner, and regional transmission operator, PJM Interconnection. The process includes studies and analyses to identify grid impacts and facilities requirements driven by new renewable energy coming onto the grid by proposed generation resources. The renewable project developers may also build electric transmission infrastructure to connect the renewable generation resource to existing Dominion Energy grid infrastructure.

Why are you rebuilding the Everetts-Greenville (Line 218) transmission line as part of this project if it is over 15 miles away from the interconnection point at Trowbridge Substation?

All elements of the electric grid are interconnected. New electric generators and energy-drawing sources in one area can impact elements of the grid in locations miles away. As part of the system impact and facilities studies for proposed generation sources discussed in the response to question one, the regional electric transmission grid is studied to determine where upgrades may be needed to maintain adherence with NERC reliability standards when the new facility comes online. In this case, in order to interconnect the Trowbridge Project, we need to rebuild Line 218 to maintain system reliability.

Who pays for grid upgrades that are driven by the connection of renewable energy facilities?

Costs for new and upgraded electric transmission infrastructure driven by generation interconnections, including renewables, are the responsibility of the generation owner (project developer).
