“My parents taught me that when you fall down, you get back up,” says Lessie Jones. “That’s how I’ve tried to live my life.”
Lessie is an assistant general counsel for Dominion Energy with more than 30 years of law practice under her belt. She says having resilience is key to ensuring justice is served.
“I realized that when you know the law, you have a true sword in your hand that you can use to peel away of lot of injustices,” says Lessie.
Lessie began her career in Cleveland, Ohio working for The Legal Aid Society, a non-profit that represents clients who can’t always afford an attorney. She recalls that it was some of the most rewarding work she’s ever done.
Shortly after, began practicing employment and labor law, quickly falling in love with the resolution-based nature of the outcomes.
“It’s a scenario where two parties have to find a way to get along and still be able to do their job together,” explains Lessie. “You have to come up with creative solutions that are acceptable to both.”
“You have to have someone who is going to help you navigate things that you won’t find in a book,” says Lessie. “It doesn’t matter how smart you are. It doesn’t matter that you graduated in the top 10% of your class. You need a mentor.”
Lessie joined the company in 2008, where she says, “Dominion is doing some things that are very helpful in the space of women's leadership”.
“It’s not lost on me that in the last three years, I’ve had two African American female bosses,” emphasizes Lessie. “That has most certainly been to my benefit.”
