With the arrival of cooler weather, it's a great time to get a heating system checkup and make some adjustments around the house. Keeping your home warm doesn't have to cause a dent in your energy bill. Here are six tips to help you to save energy this fall.

1. Know Your Heating System & Get a Checkup

Do you know what kind of heating system you have? It's important to know about the equipment and its maintenance. Common types of heating systems include:

  • Furnace (forced air distribution system)
  • Boiler (radiator distribution system)
  • Heat pump
  • Hybrid heating
  • Baseboard heaters
  • Radiant heat
  • Direct heating systems

Fall is the perfect time to get a checkup to avoid surprise problems when you first turn on the heat this winter.

2. Lower Your Thermostat

Did you know heating your home accounts for nearly 50% of your monthly bill?

Setting your thermostat to 68 degrees can make a big difference. And a programmable thermostat can keep your indoor temperature at a comfortable setting throughout the day and night.

3. Give Your Furnace Some Space

Blocked vents mean poor airflow and excess stress on your furnace.

For maximum efficiency, give your furnace some space. Move any furniture, drapes or other objects covering air vents.

4. Lower Your Water Heater Temperature

According to the Department of Energy, water heating accounts for about 18% of your home's energy use.

Setting your electric and/or gas water heater to 120 degrees (or medium heat) will help keep your energy use low.

5. Reverse the Direction of Your Ceiling Fans

During colder months, your ceiling fans should be spinning clockwise. Look for a switch that reverses the direction. This forces warm air at the ceiling down into your living space.

6. Upgrade Your Attic Insulation

You can save a lot on your energy bills by adding attic insulation to a minimum of R-38 (12-14 inches). There are a variety of methods--some do-it-yourself, and others best installed by a professional.
