How does NC GreenPower work?

Available to Dominion Energy North Carolina customers, NC GreenPower is an independent, non-profit program focused on improving the quality of our state’s environment by connection consumers with green energy and carbon offset providers. Program participants contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and to the production of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, small hydro and biomass) for North Carolina’s power supply.

What are my contribution options?

NC GreenPower offers two contribution options.

Renewable Energy

This option subsidizes the production of green power. Customers can purchase one or more blocks of clean energy for North Carolina in one of the following:

  1. Mass Market (most residential and small commercial customers)
Green power is produced from renewable sources, such as wind, solar or methane sources. Customers can make a contribution of $4 per block.
As of April 1, 2015, NC GreenPower has launched a Solar Schools pilot program to support the installation of solar PV on schools. Under the pilot, revenues to the Mass Market renewable energy product will be split into two:
    • $2.00 will pay a premium to an eligible generator producing a 50 kWh block of green power which is supplied to the electric grid in North Carolina.
    • $2.00 will support the installation of a small (2-3 kW) solar PV project at K-12 schools in North Carolina.
  2. Large-Volume Market (for purchase by larger customers)
Renewable energy is produced from a wider range of courses, such as biomass and small hydro, at a lower price. Customers can make a contribution of $2.50 per block (100 kilowatt-hours), but a minimum of 100 blocks, or $250, must be purchased per month.

Carbon Offsets

This option subsidizes the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in the form of Carbon Offsets. Customers can make a contribution of $4.00 per block (1,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions). These blocks can be purchased alone or in addition to one of the renewable energy options.

How many blocks of energy may I purchase?

If you sign up for the $4.00 per block of renewable energy option or the $4.00 per block of carbon offset option, you may add as many blocks as you like. If you choose the $2.50 per block of renewable energy option, you must add a minimum of 100 blocks, which would be $250.00.

If I participate in the renewable energy contribution option, what does my contribution go towards?

For each $4.00 donation to Renewable Energy from a customer, NC GreenPower will split the contribution into two:

  1. $2.00 will pay a premium to an eligible generator producing a 50 kWh block of green power which is supplied to the electric grid in North Carolina.
  2. $2.00 will support the installation of a small (2-3 kW) solar PV project at K-12 schools in North Carolina.

If you wish to “opt out” of the NC GreenPower School Schools pilot and direct your entire $4.00 donation to a 100 kWh block only supporting generators in the current NC GreenPower program, please contact NC GreenPower directly:

Is my contribution to NC GreenPower tax deductible?

NC GreenPower is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit and contributions may be tax deductible. You should check with an accountant to determine if you qualify for a deduction.

Does my contribution to NC GreenPower offset my regular electric bill?

No. Your contribution is a voluntary addition to the amount on your regular bill. The blocks you add are used to reduce carbon emissions or purchase green power, which is more expensive than energy generated from fossil fuels.

How does the green power get to my home?

When you contribute to the NC GreenPower renewable energy option, you are not actually purchasing energy for your home. Each block purchased means that 50 kilowatt-hours of energy produced by burning fossil fuels will be replaced by 50 kilowatt-hours of energy produced from cleaner, greener renewable energy sources.  The green power is then added to North Carolina’s energy supply.

How are carbon emissions reduced if I choose the Carbon Offset option?

When you choose the Carbon Offset option, your payment is a subsidy paid to a project owner or purchased from the market for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

How will I pay for my block contributions?

Once you sign up to contribute to NC GreenPower, the additional amount will appear on your regular monthly Dominion bill. No separate payment is needed.

Do I have to purchase all of my power through the NC GreenPower program? If I don't use 50 kilowatt-hours during a month, what happens to the extra kilowatt-hours I purchased through the GreenPower program?

You do not have to purchase enough NC GreenPower to cover your monthly usage. The number of blocks purchased is not directly related to the amount of energy you actually use. You would be billed for the energy you use and for the number of blocks you have decided to purchase through the NC GreenPower program.

How does this price compare to what I currently pay Dominion Energy North Carolina?

When you sign up for the option priced at $4.00, each block adds 4 cents to the rate you are paying per kilowatt-hour. When you sign up for the option priced at $2.50, each block adds 2.5 cents to the rate you are paying per kilowatt-hour.

Can I contribute directly to the NC GreenPower program?

Yes. Visit NCGreenPower for instructions on making a direct contribution.

Can I buy part of a block?

No. The program is limited to the purchase of whole blocks.

If I sign up for this program, when will it start and how long will it last?

Once you enroll, billing for NC GreenPower will start with your next monthly bill. You will continue to be billed for the blocks you agree to purchase until you notify us to remove you from the program.
