Dominion Energy is changing lives – Cristo Rey corporate work study program

When there is an opportunity to combine innovation with education, Dominion Energy is at the forefront. The Cristo Rey Richmond High School work study program offers us the chance to provide access to high-quality preparatory education to four Richmond-area high school students and demonstrate firsthand why the energy industry offers a path to a meaningful career and life full of opportunity.

The new Cristo Rey Richmond High School officially opened its doors in Richmond in August 2019 with 96 students, all of whom participate in work study programs to help cover tuition costs. The program educates young people from underrepresented communities through a rigorous college preparatory curriculum that integrates relevant work study experience and enables them to graduate ready to succeed in college and in life.

Lady at podiumDominion Energy was involved since the beginning, sponsoring the initial “Draft Day” where the students were selected for their corporate work-study opportunity. Dominion Energy welcomed students Orlando Palacios, Brian Hernandez, Jakyia Brockenbrough, and Olga Ramirez-Velasquez to learn more about our company and gain real-life work experience in Environmental Services, IT HelpLine and Lan Field Services, HR Operations, and Corporate Communications. During the school year, the students provide coverage for these departments, managing a variety of office responsibilities like helping with compliance plans, learning how to use tracking systems, and working on company initiatives.

“This program is full of opportunities for both the student workers and the company,” said Erin Heath, Environmental Specialist for Dominion Energy. “We’re working closely with the school to help our student worker familiarize himself with Microsoft and other computer programs he’s never used before.”

“This program is a game-changer," said Chrystal Neal, Director – Talent Acquisition and Diversity and Inclusion. “It provides students with the opportunity to pursue college-bound, work-prepared educational experience that you can’t get anywhere else. It’s exciting for Dominion Energy to be a part of developing our future talent pipeline in this innovative way.”
