Electricity students at the Chesterfield County Career & Technical Center got to experience a day in the life of a Dominion Energy line worker during a recent safety demonstration at the school.

Representatives from Distribution Construction in Midlothian, including Daniel “Poggie” Neighbors, supervisor; Craig “Abe” Toney, lineman; and Melvin Jordan, groundman, provided hands-on opportunities for students to use safety equipment and perform simple tasks. The team stressed the importance of following each step by adhering to a procedure and using good communication.

“The goal is to go home safe every day,” said Neighbors. “Don’t ever, ever take a short cut; and be your brother’s keeper.”

The Midlothian team shared stories from the field and answered a barrage of questions from the eager students. One student remarked at how heavy the equipment was, after handling insulators, cross arms, and safety gloves.

“I guess you’d get really strong doing a job like this,” remarked one student.  “I could see myself working with these guys.”
