All in the Dominion Energy Family
Billy Gatlin is a former Sergeant and All Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic in the U.S. Army and current Automotive Mechanic for Dominion Energy. He always knew he wanted to work for Dominion Energy.Billy’s father has worked for Dominion Energy for nearly 30 years, having worked his way up from lineman to manager. His stepmother is an engineer for Dominion Energy as well. Billy says all this collective experience gives him a go-to-support system for advice or questions about policies and practices, as well as understanding how everything works as a whole. “Seeing how well the company has treated my family over the course of my life made the decision to work here a no brainer.”
It took some time for Billy to get here, though—after his time in the military, he tried several jobs, including one as a groundman working for contractors and a mechanic at a car dealership. On his time in these roles, he says “it was good in a way to build the skills that would help me in my current role here at Dominion Energy.” The first time he applied for a role with the company, he was beat out by more qualified applicants. But, Billy wanted a stable career and didn’t stop applying until he landed in his current role.
As an Automotive Mechanic, Billy’s main focus is to maintain the equipment that our employees use every day. He ensures that the equipment is safe and functioning properly so that everyone goes home in the same, if not better condition, than they arrived.
What is the best part of his job? “Knowing that all my hard work has a purpose. Every time I see a lineman in a bucket truck working a pole, I know I made that possible. I maintained that truck and [the lineman] is safely turning the lights on.” Billy recommends a career at Dominion Energy to veterans for two reasons —stability and a good work-life balance. He believes that all veterans look for those two things when they complete their time in the military.
“Dominion Energy delivers on all fronts. The energy business is only growing and with Dominion Energy’s progressive practices in producing power and working together with communities, it will be here for a long time to come. Most vets have spent more time away from home than with their own family. Some have missed birthdays, even childbirths. You won’t miss one working here. Dominion Energy provides great benefits and competitive pay, so that transition is smooth from military to civilian life.”
