Gainesville to Wheeler

Project Details

You rely on Dominion Energy to power your home, business, and daily life. Keeping your electricity on is important.
To support growth in the Brentsville and Gainesville areas of Prince William County—and keep service reliable—we need to upgrade parts of the electric grid.
You’ll soon learn more about two projects in Prince William County. These projects will take place along an existing transmission line between the Gainesville–Wheeler and Devlin–Vint Hill substations.
Since both projects are in the same area, we will share updates together. You’ll also have joint opportunities to get involved, making it easier to stay informed.

Gainesville to Wheeler 230 kV Rebuild Project

The Gainesville-Wheeler 230 kV Rebuild Project is intended to replace electric transmission infrastructure to help maintain reliable electric service in the area. The project will rebuild approximately six miles of transmission line between the Gainesville and Wheeler substations.

Vint Hill to Devlin 230 kV Transmission Line Project

The Vint Hill-Devlin 230 kV Project will connect the existing Vint Hill Substation to the proposed NOVEC-owned Devlin Substation by hanging new conductor on the vacant side of existing structures for most of the route in existing corridors.  To connect conductor to these stations requires new right-of-way.
The new structures constructed as part of this project will include steel monopoles (single poles) and H frame structures.

Benefits

  • You benefit from modern, reliable infrastructure that reduces the risk of outages and failures.
  • You gain peace of mind knowing your system meets all required safety and reliability standards, while also being designed to support your future needs

Community Engagement

Public participation and involvement are vital to project planning and execution. At Dominion Energy, we strive to improve the physical, social, and economic well-being of the communities we serve.

Public Engagement Process

Once a project need is identified, conceptual project planning and design begins. Dominion Energy consults with key stakeholders throughout the planning process to gather and incorporate feedback into design plans. Key stakeholders include local, county, and state officials, state and federal agencies, historic preservation and natural resource groups, Native American tribes, and community members.
Dominion Energy encourages all stakeholders to learn more about Prince William County’s Electric Transmission Projects and submit feedback. You can contact the project team by email at  powerline@dominionenergy.com or by phone telephone at 888-291-0190.

Legal

The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) has regulatory authority over all energy providers in Virginia. Among other responsibilities, the SCC validates the need for a proposed line and approves the route and structures. In reviewing a proposed project, the SCC must consider whether potential impacts on scenic assets, historic districts, and the environment have been reasonably minimized.

Once this project is submitted to the SCC, we will post our application and provide a link to the SCC’s case docket where you will find documents related to the case, as well as information on how to submit comments.
