FAQs

A substation is a facility that changes voltage from high to low or from low to high, among other important functions. When electric transmission lines enter a substation, the voltage is lowered using transformers. The lower voltage electricity is delivered to customers using electric distribution lines.

Aging Infrastructure - Much of the equipment inside the substation is approaching the end of its service life and needs to be replaced to help maintain electric reliability.

Safety Regulations - The substation needs improvements for safety and reliability of service.

Because construction will occur on the sidewalk surrounding the substation, this area will not be accessible for pedestrians or cyclists while we work. To keep community members safe and minimize disruptions while we work, Dominion Energy has created a detour plan to allow traffic to continue around the canal sidewalks. This plan has been reviewed by local stakeholders and approved by the City of Richmond. Signage will be placed near the work site to help community members navigate the area during this time. Access to private properties and driveways will be maintained at all times.
