Perkins Creek Solar Interconnection

The Perkins Creek Solar Interconnection Project will connect renewable power to the electric grid and perform associated upgrades to electric transmission infrastructure in Buckingham, Cumberland, and Prince Edward counties.

There are three main components of this project:

  • Install new Perkins Creek Substation in Buckingham County, within Blue Rock Solar facility.
  • Install a temporary transmission line outside Perkins Creek Substation to support substation construction. This will require approximately 10 feet of new right of way for about 0.3 miles.
  • Install a new communication fiber line for system protection and response on new structures with the existing electric transmission right of way between future Perkins Creek Substation in Buckingham County and Willis Mountain Substation in Prince Edward County (approximately 4.6 mile

Project Outcome

The Perkins Creek-Willis Mountain fiber line will involve approximately 30 new steel monopoles with an average height of 67.3 feet.

Benefits

  • New structures located in the same general location as existing structures
  • Minimizes impact to the community and environment
  • Strengthens area reliability
  • Strengthens operational flexibility
  • Connects renewable resources to the electric grid

All proposed interconnections of electricity generation resources with a capacity of 20 megawatts or more are managed through a comprehensive process involving the generation owner, transmission owner, and regional transmission operator, PJM Interconnection. The process includes studies and analyses to identify grid impacts and facilities requirements driven by new renewable energy coming onto the grid by proposed generation resources. The renewable project developers may also build electric transmission infrastructure to connect the renewable generation resource to existing Dominion Energy grid infrastructure.
Costs for new and upgraded electric transmission infrastructure driven by generation interconnections, including renewables, are the responsibility of the generation owner (project developer).
