Eastern Loudoun County

Reconductor Projects

Overview

Lineworker in front of Dominion Energy truck

At Dominion Energy, we are committed to reviewing and analyzing our energy infrastructure for the communities we serve. We are replacing wires, a process known as reconductoring, on existing 230 kilovolt (kV) electric transmission lines in Loudoun County, Virginia. This project will improve electric reliability and resiliency for area residential and commercial customers. Reconductoring will increase the ampacity, or maximum current carried, on the lines. The lines are between our existing Buttermilk, Roundtable, Greenway, Enterprise, Shellhorn, Sojourner, and Cabin Run substations near the west side of Dulles International Airport.

No new right of way is needed, and existing structures will be used. Temporary traffic impacts are possible on Loudoun County Parkway, Old Ox Road, Shellhorn Road, and the Dulles Greenway.

Benefits

  • Maintains current right of way
  • Complies with mandatory standards to ensure safety, reliability and to meet future needs
  • Minimizes impact to the community and environment
  • Strengthens area reliability

Loudoun County Parkway

Safety Nets
In September 2023, temporary traffic impacts are possible where wires cross over Loudoun County Parkway. Pending approval by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), we plan to minimize delays by using a safety net over the road. For safety, shoulder and single lane closures may be required on Shellhorn Road.

FAQs

Economic and residential growth in Loudoun County, Virginia has resulted in increased electrical demand. Upgraded electric transmission infrastructure is needed to serve both new customers and maintain reliable and secure service for all residential and commercial customers in the area.
Reconductoring will increase the ampacity, or maximum current carried, on the lines. We replace the existing wires (conductor) with new wires that can more efficiently carry more current at the same voltage (230 kV).
