Commonwealth Energy Express

Project Details

The Commonwealth Energy Express HVDC Project is transmission technology designed to move large amounts of power over long distances in an efficient manor.

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) is new to the Commonwealth of Virginia and Dominion Energy but it’s also technology that’s been around for more than 100 years.

The Commonwealth Energy Express is a 200 mile long project, connecting Heritage Substation in Brunswick County with Mosby Substation in Loudoun County. In-between, the line will be placed underground, entirely in an existing right of way.

Starting in fall 2026, we will begin meeting with communities to discuss this unique transmission technology and its benefits. We’ll also share details about the project timeline, including construction work in the right of way.
